Nature Connectedness – Art & Connection with Nature
Under the influence of urbanization and indoor living, the bond between humans and nature has decreased dramatically in recent decades. Recent studies show that our nature connectedness has fallen by about 60% since the 19th century. This “extinction of experience” has far-reaching consequences: ecological crises worsen and many people feel displaced. Scientists warn that nature connectedness is actually crucial for the environment and our well-being.
This group exhibition seizes the urgency to restore and celebrate the human–nature relationship, especially now when many feel alienated from the greenery around them.
Call for artists & selection criteria
Artists are invited to submit work that does more than just depict a nature scene. We are looking for art that shows connection, vulnerability, and reflection in the human–nature relationship. Please note the following criteria:
- Depth over imagery: The work may show natural elements, but must primarily explore the underlying bond or vulnerability between humans and nature. Consider symbolism, the vulnerability of ecosystems, or personal nature experiences.
- All disciplines welcome: Paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, installations, video, textiles, mixed media – we value every form in which the theme comes to life.
- Sustainable use of materials: Artists who use sustainable, (re)used, or natural materials will receive an extra advantage. Previous reuse, eco-materials, or experimental techniques are welcome.
All submissions will be assessed on quality, originality, and relevance to the theme.
Why participate?
For artists, this exhibition offers an opportunity to participate in a socially relevant project at a special location. The Engelse Kerk is a historical meeting point where art and education, among other things, come together. Your work gains visibility in an inspiring environment and can touch people on a deep human level. Furthermore, nature-connected art leads the conversation about sustainability and human well-being. As scientists emphasize, nature connectedness is not only good for the environment, but also for mental health and meaning. This theme resonates broadly – many visitors are looking for restoration and hope in a world with climate concerns.
For visitors, this will be a unique experience: you walk through artistic translations of nature connection in a monumental monastery chapel and garden. It is a chance to gain new insights and engage in conversation with artists about our place in nature. The Engelse Kerk in Middelburg, the oldest chapel in Middelburg, is an inspiring environment in the monumental heart of the city, a place that invites reflection and encounter. The exhibition offers accessible access to art and dialogue – perfect for anyone who wants to ‘come home’ to nature and be inspired by creative imaginings of it.
Public activities
During October, we are organizing various activities for the public and artists:
- Workshops (including nature photography, outdoor drawing) in which participants (re)discover nature themselves.
- Guided walks in the vicinity of Middelburg, with a nature guide or artist providing explanations about the local flora, fauna, and cultural history.
- Artist talks and tours by the curator, focusing on the selected works and the theme.
- Child-friendly activities, such as a scavenger hunt through the exhibition.
These program components make Nature Connectedness not just a viewing exhibition, but an experience for all the senses.
