Sandra’s work invites a sense of slowing down. In our busy world, there is little room left for silence, and that is precisely what she seeks to find. She constantly seeks to return to the tranquility that greets her in Zeeland. During long walks and cycling trips, she makes sketches of coastlines, clouds, and horizons, which later translate in the studio into quiet, solitary, and meditative landscapes, sometimes featuring lonely figures often turned away from the viewer. Reality is deliberately released, and forms are simplified to enhance the atmosphere. The work is not about capturing an exact location, but about the emotion of the moment. Light and color play the leading roles in her work. Color plays an important part in how we feel, and cool tones such as blue and green promote peace and calm.

Sandra was trained as a visual arts teacher and subsequently studied drawing and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. In 1995, she became a co-founder and chairperson of the non-profit organization De Blauwe Draad, with the aim of “organizing exhibitions and educational activities related to the visual arts, and organizing cultural events in every possible way and in all possible sectors.”

The depicted area breathes an emptiness that hardly exists in reality anymore. I omit what is superfluous, what disturbs me, or what distracts me, in order to arrive at a quiet, solitary, and meditative landscape.

Reflecting is looking back on experiences, thoughts, and feelings to learn from them consciously and improve future actions—something that, for me, can be done nowhere better than in total silence by the sea.
