Dimension of spatiality

Doris Faassen (1966) was born in Hilden and lives in Wuppertal, Germany. Doris studied philosophy, communication design, and mathematics at the University of Düsseldorf and the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, among others. Since 2010, Faassen has gained recognition for a multi-year series of paintings in which she consistently portrayed the same model. She combines painterly and graphic elements in her work. Areas where spatial illusionism is avoided are contrasted with areas where spatial illusionism is applied. This creates a tension between these two conceptions of space. Regarding the appropriation of reality, she moves between analytical logic (drawing) and felt perception (painting). A further dimension of spatiality arises from the tension between space as a subjective space of expression and realistic space, with the implication of dealing with real objects in the world. In recent years, Doris has participated in numerous group exhibitions in leading galleries and museums in Germany, including Düsseldorf, Siegen, Wuppertal, Hagen, and Moers, and she received the CityARTkaden Art Prize from Boesner Düsseldorf in 2019.
